Southside Sojourn
The best of both worlds! Though this trail is the least secret, it could very well be the most unique! We’ll begin our adventure just north of
South Beach and attempt to make it all the way to the Cattle Point lighthouse. Be prepared for three miles of pleasant pathways mixed between dense forest and open spaces with maximum elevations of 300 feet.
We begin a great walk through the woods and rolling shoreline to find Jackle’s
Lagoon. Once we’re there, we’ll pause to spy on the wildlife and appreciate the beauty of a primitive natural spot. Next, it’s on to Third Lagoon – another neat venue to see a real tidal pool! After we’ve finished tromping along rocky shores, we’ll begin our ascent of Mt. Finlayson.
While the trail is mostly very kind, a quarter mile section here may make you think unkind thoughts about your guide as the path goes vertical! However, all those negative thoughts will turn into hugs when you see what awaits you on the other side. Spectacular and expansive views of the Olympic Mountain Range, Lopez Island and South Beach stay with you all the way back to the trailhead.
Breathe it in, but watch your step on the way down! While this is the only loop trail without a real breaking point, we don’t think you’ll have time to notice!
